| • | Balta is a town in Ukraine, near the Dniester River, inhabited by Ukrainians and Romanians. Its name is of Romanian origin, meaning "the pond". In 1924, Stalin created a Moldavian ASSR (Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic) in Ukraine, with Balta as its capital. The republic had Romanian as its official language and officialized the Latin script. Stalin changed his mind in the 1930s and disbanded the Republic and its leaders were shot for treason.
