The university is lead by the Brothers of St. Gabriel, which has been active in education in Thailand since 1901.
In 1969 the Assumption School of Business was founded by the Assumption Commercial College. In 1972 it received approval of the Ministry of Education and was officially registered as the Assumption Business Administration College (ABAC). In 1990 it was granted university status by the Ministry of University Affairs.
The university has two campuses in Bangkok, one in Hua Mak and one in Bang Na.
Assumption University is also noted as one of Thailands only university attracting a large number of foreign students from countries like India, China, Myanmar, Russia, Bangladesh, etc. Especially students from China make up the largest number.
