| • | Scripture Union (S.U.) is an international, non-denominational, evangelical Christian movement. It was founded in 1867, and works in partnership with individuals and churches across the world. The movement's stated aim is to use the Bible to inspire children, young people and adults to know God. There are independent Scripture Union movements in more than 130 countries across the world. Activities and methods vary, and movements are linked through an international fellowship. Each national movement is autonomous, and seeks to work through local people in ways that are sensitive to the national culture. History In 1867 Josiah Spiers spoke to fourteen children in a drawing room in Islington, London, and began the then pioneer work of sharing Christ with children. This led to the founding of the Childrenࢀ-2509; Special Service Mission, or CSSM, which was later to become Scripture Union. In 1879 SU introduced a system of daily Bible reading. A membership card had a list of daily readings, with explanatory notes in childrenࢀ-2509; magazines. Booklets of notes were published for troops in the trenches during the Great War from 1914-18, and led to the first issue of Daily Notes in 1923. These emphases on work with children and daily Bible reading persist in S.U.'s work. Source: [wikipedia: scripture union]
