In the 2001 National Census it had a population of 2,138. It has traditionally been a stronghold of radical left-wing politics, during the 1930s it had Communist councillors, and in 2005 it is represented on West Dunbartonshire council by Jim Bollan, one of only two Scottish Socialist Party councillors. It lies on the main road between Alexandria and Dumbarton. It has a railway station on the line from Glasgow to Balloch. It has a footbridge across the River Leven, and a minor road across Carman Hill to Cardross. Renton is the birthplace of the writer Tobias Smollett.
