| • | The University of Arkansas, Pine Bluff was founded in 1873 as Branch Normal College, part of the Normal Department of the Arkansas Industrial University. Growth was originally slow until 1927. Originally housed in a rented frame building on the corner of Sevier and Lindsey streets (now Second and Oak) it has since moved to University Drive (formerly Highway 79). Starting with a faculty of one there are now over 500 staff and faculty. The Pine Bluff Campus currently comprises 56 buildings situated on 318 acres on the Pine Bluff campus with a research farm of 871 acres at Lonoke.
In 1882, the college moved from the Oak Street location to a two-story brick building on a 20 acre plot on the west side of the city between West Second and Fourth Avenues, between Plum Street to the east and Cedar Street to the west.The school conferred ten Bachelor of Arts degrees between 1882 and 1885. However it then functioned as a junior college with a grammar school and a preparatory department (high school) until 1928. The Licentiate of Instruction (teaching certificate) was the only degree awarded until 1930 when two students were awarded the Bachelor of Arts.
In 1927 an independent board of trustees for the college were appointed by the Govenor and the state legislature allocated $275,000 for the building of a new campus just outside the city limits. The General Education Board also contributed $183,000 and the Rosenwald Fund donated $33,000.
On December 15, 1929, John Brown Watson and his students moved to the new campus at the current site. Within two years, a eight residences for instructors and a gymnasium had been added, with two more dormitories and a library in 1939.
In 1942, following the sudden death of John Brown Watson, Lawrence A. Davis, Sr became the president of the institution.
Further building work added more buildings: Science Building (1950), Agricultural Building (1950), Student Union (1952), Student Infirmary (1952), Vocational Arts Building (1963), Women's Dormitory Complex (1965), 15-unit Faculty Apartment Building (1965), Teacher Education Building (1965) and anew Library building (1968),
The college farm, consists of 213 acres acres with an Agri-Lab providing services and research facilities(1966) costing a quarter of a million dollars. In cooperation with the University of Arkansas and the Arkansas Archaeological Survey, an Anthropological Laboratory increased was developed in 1967.
