Escumiac, (population, 242) is a fishing hamlet in Northumberland County, New Brunswick at the entrance to Miramichi Bay in eastern New Brunswick, Canada. It lies on the south shore of the estuary of the Miramichi River a few miles west of Point Escuminac. A small inshore fishing fleet uses the breakwater. There is a small fish packing and freezing business in the community.
Escuminac was originally an Irish and English settlement, but outward emigration and the prevalence of French speakers in the immediate area has changed its composition somewhat.
Escuminac and surrounding fishing villages, especially Baie Ste. Anne, Hardwicke and Bay du Vin were the site of a tragedy on June 19 and June 20 1959 when a sudden storm caused a loss of 35 fishermen of the area. It is called the Escuminac Disaster.
