| • | This is a list of ROM hacks that were released for NES emulators. People who make ROM hacks (ROM hackers) are amateur game designers who create new video games for antiquated console systems (NES, Atari 2600, Sega Master System, etc.) in order to enhance the product with ideas and slogans that the original game designers never intended to do.
NES ROM hacks are video games for the Nintendo Entertainment System that have been altered by computer programs (such as Hexpose, a program that can alter hexadecimals on any file on a personal computer) that can edit levels (playing areas), characters (good guys and bad guys), graphics (pictures on the screen), text (what the people are saying), etc. Unless they are transferred to cart form by special hardware, ROM hacks can only be played on emulators that perform inside personal computers or certain console systems.
Although they become homebrew once the hack is published, they still play somewhat like the original video games, therefore, ROM hacks are a part of a video game subculture, and not that of a counterculture. ROM hacks are preferred among older gamers because the creators often remove the censorship on old NES games (which were famous for being severly censored in North American releases). In a Bionic Commando game for, example, someone with the expertise might place the original swatiskas of the Japanese version into the North American version.
In constrast to pirated games manufactured in Asia, ROM hacks are frequently made in North America and ROM hackers are not allowed to charge money for their ROM hacks (unlike Asian bootleg game designers, who charge a hefty fortune in their native currency for video games that only function in Asian Famicom machines).
Sometimes ROM hacks are either crossovers and/or inflict other people's copyrights. Other times, ROM hacks are original works to "improve" the content of the original game that is being hacked. While the majority of ROM hacks contain coarse language and/or adult content, there are a few ROM hacks out there out on the Internet that are suitable for all ages. Because they are homebrew products however, ESRB ratings for ROM hacks are non-existent and the viewer's discretion is advised on all ROM hacks.
