| • | Karuizawa (軽井沢町; -machi) is a town located in Kitasaku District, Nagano, Japan. As of 2003, the town has an estimated population of 16,913 and a density of 108.38 persons per km². The total area is 156.05 km². Karuizawa is known throughout Japan as a popular tourist spot. Many couples and families from Tokyo will travel to Karuizawa to get away from the city. There is a Shinkansen station there as well as a large outlet store shopping mall. It is also known for its historic vendor street known as the "Ginza strip." Karuizawa's history remained relatively insignificant until the early 1900's when the town became popular amongst western missionaries, and by the 1930's was a bustling center of Protestant missionaries and their churches.
