| • | MaxDB is a relational database management system (RDBMS) developed and maintained by the software company SAP to act as the default data repository for the SAP suite of applications. Upon purchasing the RDBMS from Software AG, SAP named it SAP DB. It has subsequently been named MySQL MaxDB after SAP created a business partnership with MySQL AB. Prior to the SAP DB name, the database had a few other names, and was originally Adabas D - a pre-relational dbms.
MaxDB has been open source since SAPDB version 7.2, and is free for use in non SAP environments. The database is licensed under GPL. Programming interfaces are licensed under the LGPL.
From version 7.5 onwards distribution of SapDB was taken over by MySQL AB, the same company that develops the open-source MySQL database. Development is still done by SAP AG. The product has been renamed MySQL MaxDB and has been re-released under new licensing. The Programming interfaces of MaxDB are now licensed under the GPL.
