| • | Major is a military rank. It is usually immediately superior to the rank of Captain (OF-2), and immediately subordinate to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel (OF-4), and has the NATO rank code OF-3.
The rank originated in English as Sergeant-Major, and was the third-in-command of a regiment. By the time of the English Civil War, it was already frequently being abbreviated to Major, and soon lost its original designation altogether.
