Rainham has grown from Rainham village, which is now at the centre of the town. A large clocktower makes the centrepiece of the Broadway. The Norman church is another recognisable landmark of Rainham and is the oldest building in Havering, as well as an adjacent 17th century house which is now in the hands of the National Trust. The A1306 dual carriageway passes through Rainham and acts an alternative route to the A13 between Central London and the Dartford Crossing. Rainham has a large RSPB nature reserve near the River Thames, which used to be and still is to an extent a busy industrial estate. Tilda Rice operates a main plant from here. Schools in Rainham include The Chafford, Parsonage Farm Primary School and Rainham Village Primary School. The waterside area to the south of Rainham is part of the London Riverside section of the Thames Gateway project. Rainham is 13.6 miles (21.9 km) east of Charing Cross. Nearest places:
