| • | Kloof, meaning a small canyon in Afrikaans is a small, leafy, middle- to upper-income suburb of the greater Durban area eThekwini in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It is a predominately white, English-speaking area.
A stream known as the Molweni (stream of high cliffs) cuts a deep ravine in one part of Kloof. This ravine is the 4.47 square kilometre Krantzkloof Nature Reserve. The town is also home to several state and private schools including the prestigious St Mary's Diocesan School for Girls. Kloof starts from the top of Field's Hill and borders Winston Park, Gillitts and Hillcrest with the M13 highway intersecting it. These suburbs are collectively known as the Upper Highway Area. Kloof also features several upmarket shopping centres and the Kloof Country Club. It is known as a mist-belt with winding roads and tree-surrounded mansions. Residents of Durban built country houses as retreats that were relatively close to the city. An increasing number of people began permanently living in Kloof and during the 1960s and 1970s, the development of the traditional Kloof houses occurred. These consisted of large houses that were built on sites of at least one acre (4,000 m²). Many of the houses have slate roofs, a swimming pool, small guest houses and tennis courts and they are often tucked away amidst the trees. Examples of these can be found in the prime areas of Kloof: Abrey Road, Alexander Avenue, Haygarth Road, Impala Road and Quillhall Lane which are near the golf course and the Everton area. The South African property market, though still undervalued has seen some high growth in 2003 and 2004 and most Kloof houses sell for 2,000,000 to 3,000,000 South African Rand which is well above the regional average. The larger homes, rarely on the market, are sold for 6,000,000 to 30,000,000 South African Rand but these are still at a discount by international standards. Although it is regarded as a mature suburb, which most development taking place in neighbouring Hillcrest, rich residents and newcomers are still building large houses where land is available, though these houses are built in Tuscan, Tudor and more modern designs than that of the typical Kloof home. Kloof forms part of the route of the Comrades Marathon, run annually bet Source: [wikipedia: kloof, kwazulu-natal]
