| • | Chigasaki (茅ヶ崎市 Chigasaki-shi) is a city located in central Kanagawa Prefecture and is famous for its ocean beach. Called Southern Beach, the beach inspired the name of "Southern All Stars," a famous Japanese pop singing group whose lead vocalist Keisuke Kuwata hails from Chigasaki. A popular swimming destination, Chigasaki is also well-known as the birthplace of Japanese surfing. A shop called "Goddess," located only about 20 meters from the shoreline, is the first surfboard shop in Japan. Bicycles with metal fittings for holding sufboards are prominent in the area. The symbol of Southern Beach is Eboshi-iwa, a large hat-shaped rock that is visible from the coast. The shoreline from Chigasaki to Kamakura is called Shonan. As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 225,156 and the density of 6,305.12 persons per sq. km. The total area is 35.71 sq. km.
Chigasaki is the home town of JAXA astronaut Soichi Noguchi, a member of NASA's STS-114. The city was founded on October 1, 1947. Source: [wikipedia: chigasaki, kanagawa]
