After graduating from the University of Hawaii with a Bachelors of Science degree in Geology in 1962 and a Master of Science in Geological Sciences in 1965, he moved east to the Smithsonian Institute as a post-doctoral fellow for 1965-1966. He made his way to the epicenter of oceanography and marine biology, Woods Hole, Massachusetts, to work as a graduate fellow/visiting researcher/assistant scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) until 1974. In 1974, he graduated from Harvard University with a Ph.D. in Geological Sciences. It was a scientific cruise on the WHOI research vessel Chain in the 1960's that introduced him to the eruption of Santorini (also known as Thera), in the Cyclades Islands of Greece. This island became the focus of his lifetime work. Source: [wikipedia: floyd warren mccoy, jr]
