Hellships were unmarked Japanese freighters used during WWII to transport Allied prisoners, both civilian and military POWs, to Japan, China, Manchuria, Korea, etc. where they would work as slave laborers for the Japanese war effort. Because these ships were unmarked, Allied forces frequently targeted and torpedoed them - not knowing that prisoners were confined in the holds of these freighters, with no chance of escape if the ship were hit. More than 62,000 POWs were transported in 56 ships, of which 19 were torpedoed or bombed (and sunk) and one was lost in a typhoon. More than 22,000 (35.2 percent) -- or more than one in three -- lost their lives. The following is a list of the names of all the Japanese Hellships used during WWII. Some names may refer to the same vessel.
