Jainism (pronounced in English as //), traditionally known as Jain Dharma (ࠤ&#-2208;&#-1720;ࠤ&#-1632;ࠤ&#-1504;&#-1744;ࠥ&#-3168;&#-1746;) , is a classical religion with its origins in the prehistory of India. The Jains, although a small minority in India now, have continued to sustain the shraman (ࠤ&#-544;&#-1715;ࠤ&#-928;&#-1746;ࠤ&#-1943; tradition. Jainism is significantly influential in both the ethical and economic spheres in India. Jainism places great stress on compassion to all living beings. Self-control (ࠤ&#-608;&#-1715;ࠤ&#-928;&#-1756;, vrata in Sanskrit) forms a central part of being a Jain.
A lay Jain is termed a shravaka (ࠤ&#-544;&#-1715;ࠤ&#-928;&#-1730;ࠤ&#-608;&#-1771;) i.e. a listener. The Jain Sangha (ࠤ&#-416;&#-1790;ࠤ&#-2647; has four components: monks (ࠤ&#-416;&#-1730;ࠤ&#-1504;&#-1727;), nuns, lay men and women.
