| • | Straight, Incorporated was a widespread adolescent drug treatment center that operated for 17 years in the US. This program utilized such techniques as starvation, sleep deprivation, extreme emotional abuse, isolation, and other types of physical abuse in order to completely break down the adolescents' personality so that they could be rebuilt according to program dogma. Many of the facilities closed due to allegations of child abuse, although at times the facilities would simply change names, and were still otherwise the same program.
Much of the abuse went on because of three factors:
· The children were allowed absolutely no contact with their parents (or anyone outside of the program) until the staff was sure that the child had begun to buy into the program dogma, a process that could take months, and
