| • | Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS) is a contract research laboratory established in 1952 [HTTP ] based in Huntingdon, England, and New Jersey in the United States. It performs research for a variety pharmaceutical, biotechnology, agrochemical and chemical companies around the world, particularly in the UK, Japan and USA. Around half of the company's revenue comes from in vivo testing (involving live animals), and half from in-vitro and other testing. The company uses 71,500 animals annually for testing, 2.75% of the UK national total. 92% of testing is conducted on birds, rats, and fish, 2.9% on dogs, cats, and primates, and 5.1% on pigs and other animals. It is this animal testing that has attracted controversy, with undercover investigations by anti-vivisectionists exposing acts of cruelty by company employees. The company has been subject to one of the most sustained campaigns against a corporation in history, with an ongoing campaign involving peaceful protests, death threats, intimidation and other activities against the company, its clients, suppliers and staff.
