| • | Waldeck is a small town of about 8,000 inhabitants in northern Hesse, dominated by an imposing castle overlooking the valley of the Eder river and the Edersee and first mentioned in 1120. It was the residence of the counts of Waldeck who, beginning around 1200, gradually gathered a sizeable realm under the control and, through inheritance having added the county of Pyrmont to their holdings, were elevated to princes of Waldeck-Pyrmont in 1712. In 1655, the residence was transferred to Arolsen, and Waldeck lost its importance. Today, the town is an important center of tourism, especially in the summer months when the Edersee, Germany's third largest reservoir created by the construction of a dam in 1914, attracts hundreds of thousands to its shores for camping, boating and swimming. The dam, designed to help regulate water levels for shipping on the Weser river and to generate hydro-power, was destroyed by British bombers on May 17, 1943 (see Operation Chastise), causing massive flooding and loss of life downstream, but was rebuilt. The castle, with an impressive view of the lake, contains an interesting museum, a hotel and restaurant.Towns in Hesse Source: [wikipedia: waldeck, hesse]
