| • | Puuwai is the main (and only) settlement on Niihau. It is at the center of the small island -- the 180 or so native Hawaiians who live in this village speak the Hawaiian language. The community lives as they did hundreds of years ago -- the modern amenities of life are extremely limited. Puuwai has a one room schoolhouse. Most residents are registered members of the Republican party.
