In Hawaiian ka halu‘u means literally "diving place". As of the 2000 Census, the CDP had a total population of 2,935. At Kahulu‘u, visitors to the windward side travelling via the Pali Highway, H-3, or Likelike Highway first encounter the ocean (actually Kāne'ohe Bay) close beside the highway (Kamehameha Highway or State Rte. 83).
