The line of Catholic bishops of Worcester can be traced back to the year 680. After the interlude of the Protestant John Hooper (1552-1554), appointed under Edward VI and deprived by Mary I, the line resumed with Nicholas Heath and then Richard Pate. This latter was then in 1559 deprived by Elizabeth I and died a decade later in imprisonment. From 1559 the Anglican line has continued to the present day.
