| • | The Bishop of Salisbury headed in the Middle Ages and the Tudor period the Catholic diocese of Salisbury in the Province of Canterbury, in England. The present diocese covers much of the Counties of Wiltshire and Dorset. The see is in the City of Salisbury where the seat is located at the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Diocese of Sherborne, created in 705 was the origin of the present diocese. The see was removed successively to Salisbury (New Sarum), Sarum (Old Sarum) and back to Salisbury in 1227 under King Henry III. The line of Catholic Bishops ended in 1557 with Bishop John Salcott.
