| • | Appleton Thorn hosts the ࢀ-2622;awming the Thornࢀ-2592;each June. The ceremony dates from the Nineteenth Century, when it was part of the villageࢀ-2509; ࢀ-2601;alking Dayࢀ-2578; It involved children walking through the village and holding sports and games at the school. This now takes place at the Village Hall. The ceremony stopped in the 1930ࢀ-2509;, but later revived by the then headmaster, Mr. Bob Jones in 1967. ࢀ-2622;awming the Thornࢀ-2592;occurs on the Saturday nearest to Midsummerࢀ-2509; Day. Local schoolchildren dance around the tree. Appleton appeared in the Domesday survey as ࢀ-2619;peltuneࢀ-2592;and means ࢀ-2572;he tun where the apples grew.ࢀ-2564;br/>The Appleton Cross near Pepper Street, reminds us of a Warrington friar, in 1365, Richard de Apulton who was ordained as the sub-deacon at Colwich.
