| • | Animal welfare groups argue for greater protection for non-human animals, particulary those used by human beings in laboratories, for food and in entertainment, and those kept as companion animals. Animal rights groups (also called animal liberationists) groups argue that animals should not be used in these ways in the first place. Some of these groups also argue that non-human animals have moral rights, and ought to be awarded enforceable rights in law. Groups describing themselves as concerned with animal rights as opposed to animal welfare tend to be more activist. Some animal-rights groups say breaking the law in order to help animals is justifiable. Some groups condone civil disobedience, some condone property destruction, and one or two are known to justify violence against humans.
