| • | Albany is an ancient and literary Celtic name for Scotland, north of the Firth of Forth (east) and Firth of Clyde (west). Variants are Alban, Albin, Alba and Albion. Other uses probably derive from this. It is unclear whether these toponyms have the same etymon as the Balkan Albania or the ancient Caucasian Albania (see Origin and history of the name Albania). Today, Albany is most commonly used as the name of the New York state capital, but is also the name of many other cities. (See Albany, New York.) In addition, there are a number of places named New Albany. __NOTOC__ Source: [wikipedia: albany]
