Herding Cats, A Life in Politics is a book written by Sen. Trent Lott, a Republican from Mississippi. The major points of this book are from the childhood of the Senator to his election and the presidential coverage from Richard Nixon to the current President of the United States, George W. Bush.
The main aim of this book, according to many critics, has been to portray his innocence in the comments he made at the birthday party of Sen. Strom Thurmond in 2002, which gained intense media coverage after a couple of days after his comments, which eventually led to his resignation as the Senate Majority Leader in December 2002. Some refer that this book might serve another purpose, as a insight into the minds of GOP Senators and leaders, which, according to him, played a major "conspiracy" to bring him down. Among those, whom Sen. Lott blames, include President George W. Bush, 65th Secretary of State, Colin Powell and the successor to his post, Sen. Bill Frist.
Sen. Lott said that Sen. Frist of Tennessee, deceived him and "stabbed him in the back", since Sen. Lott himself took Sen. Frist as his mentor, since the subject of politics and procedure was new to Frist, since he was cardiologist and had no political/public experience.
After the bitter attack by many Republican and Democratic Senators, Sen. Lott was forced to resign, even though he resisted. He points that this resignation was a "strategic plan" devised by Pres. Bush and others who wanted Bill Frist to take his place, since the interests of the White House were better represented by Sen. Frist. Lott notes that he gave various speeches, both on News Channels and in newspapers, but was hit very badly and represented very badly in the entire Senate and American community.
Lott, when asked if he would support Frist, who is widely suspected of running in 2008 for the presidency, made comments in Meet the Press, that he would have to think seriously and would have to incline with others who are considering the run. Many critics declared that another interest, which is not shown directly, but indirectly, might portray Sen. Frist as a devious, selfish and unfriendly person, who looks for opportunities and runs with them, without thinking for others.
Some also point, that the specific details of Sen. Frist and his fight to succeed as the next Majority Leader is shown to hamper his presidential ambitions, which might be considered as a "p
